Places and rules

The video for the classify feature page. Sam tags a place, sets a rule, and watches a week of drives classify themselves, then handles the rest with swipes and the weekly reminder.

Setup

  • Miles installed with the Civic and Home. Sunset Dental not yet tagged. A week of 2026 drives in the fixture, several of them to and from Sunset Dental.

Scenes

Scene 1. Tag a place (0:00–0:14)

  • On screen. Drives, with "Home to 3808 SE Hawthorne Blvd · 4.2 mi" under "Unclassified". The row is tapped. On the Drive detail screen the end place is tapped and "Tag this place" is chosen. The name "Sunset Dental" is typed and the rule "Drives to or from this place are business" is selected. Save. Back in Drives, every drive to or from that address this week moves out of "Unclassified" with a Business label.
  • Narration. "Tag a place once and set its rule. Every drive to or from it, past and future, is classified."
  • Capture notes. Stay on the list as the rows reclassify, then hold 2 s.

Scene 2. Swipe the rest (0:14–0:26)

  • On screen. Two drives remain under "Unclassified". "Home to Powell's Books" is swiped left, Personal. "Home to 1120 NW Couch St" is swiped right, Business, then tapped, and the note "Meeting with the accountant" is typed.
  • Narration. "Swipe right for business, left for personal. A note covers the ones an address does not explain."

Scene 3. Home and work (0:26–0:36)

  • On screen. Places. "Home" with "Home office" off, and "Regular workplace" set to "Lloyd Center office". The caption under Regular workplace reads "Drives between Home and this place are commuting". A drive "Home to Lloyd Center office" in Drives is labeled "Commuting".
  • Narration. "Drives between home and a regular workplace are commuting, which is never deductible. Miles keeps them separate so the log says so."

Scene 4. The weekly reminder (0:36–0:45)

  • On screen. The lock screen on a Sunday evening. A notification reads "4 drives to classify this week". Tapping it opens Drives at the unclassified group. Text card. "A weekly log is a timely log."
  • Narration. "A reminder once a week keeps the log timely, which is what the IRS asks for."
