Mileage tracker for DoorDash, Uber, Instacart, and Spark drivers

A delivery or rideshare shift is fifteen or twenty short drives with a stop at each one. The platform reports only the miles on an active order or with a passenger in the car. The miles to the pickup and the miles between orders while you wait for the next one are business miles too, and the platform does not count them. Written up after the fact, the shift turns into a guess. Miles is a mileage tracker for DoorDash, Uber, Uber Eats, Lyft, Instacart, and Spark drivers that records the shift while you drive it, with the date, the destination, the purpose, and the miles for each drive, kept at the time you drove.

This page is general information, not tax advice.

The workflow

  1. Tap Start shift when you go online in the driver app. The Live Activity on the lock screen shows the shift is running. Every drive until you end the shift is classified as business without a swipe.
  2. Drive. The app detects each drive, records the route, and resolves the addresses. Pickups, drop-offs, and the repositioning drives between orders are all captured, because you are driving for the same business purpose.
  3. Tap End shift when you go offline. The drives of the shift are combined into a single record with the total miles, the first and last stops, and the number of stops. You can expand it to see each drive.
  4. Tag the platform. DoorDash, Uber, Uber Eats, Lyft, Instacart, and Spark are tags. Set one per shift so the year's report can show miles by platform. A driver who runs two apps at once picks both.
  5. Attach parking and tolls from the drive detail screen. They are deductible in addition to the standard mileage rate. Review note. Whether airport pickup fees are a separate expense category needs a product decision.
  6. Swipe the leftovers. A drive after the shift, such as groceries on the way home, shows up unclassified at the top of the Drives list. Swipe left for personal.

Why one record per shift works

Publication 463 says you can account for several uses of your car that are part of a single use, such as a round trip or an uninterrupted business use, with a single record, and gives the example of deliveries at several locations on one route. A shift of orders or rides with brief waits between them is that kind of use. The combined record keeps the individual drives underneath it, so if you need to show the drive to one pickup, it is there.

Long personal breaks are a different case. If you go offline for two hours and drive to a friend's house, end the shift first, and start it again when you go back online. Review note. The app could detect a long gap and ask whether the shift should be split. That needs a product decision.

What the export shows

At tax time the mileage log PDF lists each shift with its date, stops, purpose ("DoorDash deliveries"), and miles, and the tax summary gives the year's total business miles and the deduction at the standard mileage rate. For 2026 the rate is 72.5 cents a mile from January 1 to June 30 and 76 cents from July 1 to December 31, and the summary applies the right rate to each drive by date. Parking and tolls you attached are listed separately. The guide for DoorDash and Uber drivers covers what to do with the numbers and answers the question of whether the platform tracks your mileage for you.

Home to the first pickup

Home to your first order of the day is business when your home is where the work starts. Review note. Whether the drive from home to the first pickup is deductible depends on facts the IRS decides case by case, and the copy should say so rather than promise it. The commuting rules from Publication 463 are in what the IRS requires in a mileage log.

Canada

In Canada, rideshare and delivery drivers are self-employed and report on Form T2125. There is no per-kilometre rate for the self-employed. You deduct actual vehicle costs in proportion to business kilometres over total kilometres, which is why the odometer readings at the start and end of the year matter as much as the drives. Rideshare drivers must also register for GST/HST from the first dollar of fares. The $30,000 small-supplier threshold does not apply to them. See taxes for gig drivers in Canada.

Your location history stays yours

The shift, the routes, and the addresses are stored on your iPhone and in your own iCloud account. Nothing goes to a server we run, because we operate none. A platform, an insurer, or a data broker cannot get your driving history from us.
