Expenses and both methods

The video for the expenses feature page. Sam logs a fuel receipt, sees the year's vehicle costs, and compares the deduction figured both ways.

Setup

  • Miles installed with the Civic, a full year of 2026 drives, and expenses entered through the year. Business use 77.6%.
  • A paper fuel receipt for the scanner scene.

Scenes

Scene 1. A fuel receipt (0:00–0:12)

  • On screen. Expenses. "Add expense" is tapped. "Fuel" is chosen, "$52.40" is typed, and the camera icon opens the document scanner over the receipt. The expense appears under "Civic · 2026" with the date.
  • Narration. "Fuel, maintenance, insurance, and the rest are logged per vehicle, with the receipt."

Scene 2. The year's costs (0:12–0:22)

  • On screen. Expenses, filtered to the Civic and 2026. Rows read "Fuel $2,180.15", "Insurance $1,344.00", "Maintenance and tires $612.50", "Registration $186.00", "Loan interest $410.22", "Parking and tolls $214.00", total "$4,946.87".
  • Narration. "Parking and tolls are separate, because they are deductible whichever method you use."

Scene 3. Both methods (0:22–0:38)

  • On screen. Reports for 2026, the "Both methods" card. Left, "Standard mileage rate · 11,842 mi · $8,846.12 + parking and tolls $214.00 = $9,060.12". Right, "Actual expenses · $4,732.87 × 77.6% + depreciation $3,924.00 + parking and tolls $214.00 = $7,810.71". Review note. The depreciation figure on the card needs the depreciation feature settled.
  • Narration. "The card figures the deduction both ways, the standard mileage rate and actual expenses times your business-use percentage. If you want the standard rate for a car you own, you have to choose it the first year, so the numbers matter in year one."
  • Capture notes. Zoom on each side of the card in turn and hold 2 s on each.

Scene 4. Close (0:38–0:45)

  • On screen. Vehicles, the Civic, "Deduction method 2026 · Standard mileage rate". Text card. "Log the costs. Decide with numbers."
  • Narration. "Set the method per vehicle per year, and the tax summary follows it."
